چکیده

862 NOTICES OF THE AMS VOLUME 47, NUMBER 8 A pril 9, 1900, marks the birth date of H. D. Kloosterman, one of the leading Dutch mathematicians of his generation. At the University of Leiden, where he spent most of his academic life, the centenary of his birth was the occasion for a small celebration, with a discussion by several experts of Kloosterman’s work on number theory, modular forms, and representation theory; and of its place in contemporary mathematics. Although he was not a prolific writer, his work had a significant impact and is still of considerable interest. The centenary is also a good occasion for a brief discussion of Kloosterman’s work for a wider public. This is the raison d’être of the present article.

An experimental investigation of heat transfer of Fe2O3/Water nanofluid in a double pipe heat exchanger

One way to increase the heat transfer is to use perforated twisted tapes with different hole diameters, which largely improve heat transfer with an increase in the heat transfer area at the constant volume and more mixed flow. In the previous studies, the effect of nanofluids with perforated twisted tapes is less studied. In this work, the performance of water / iron oxide nanofluid in a double...

Jean Leray (1906–1998), Volume 47, Number 3

Jean Leray was first and foremost an analyst. His involvement with algebraic topology was initially incidental and became later, at first for nonmathematical reasons, a topic of major interest for him for about ten years. His papers are written with his own notation and conventions, which, for the most part, have not been adopted and are consequently little read today. But it is there that shea...

Incomplete Kloosterman Sums and Multiplicative Inverses in Short Intervals

We investigate the solubility of the congruence xy ≡ 1 (mod p), where p is a prime and x, y are restricted to lie in suitable short intervals. Our work relies on a mean value theorem for incomplete Kloosterman sums.
